When John Kershaw pastor of the Strict Baptist Church in Rochdale England died in 1870, he left an unfinished autobiography, which his widow was well able to complete, adding an account of his last days. Still, it needed revision, and she insisted upon her late husband's good friend John Gadsby, to review the 500 page folio and asked him to provide an introduction to these, his memoirs. His reluctance at first was due to many reasons, not the least being a debilitating ailment contracted from his last journey to the East, but he agreed to undertake the work, finding it rather to be a labour of love.
