William Gadsby (1773 - 1844) for 38 years was pastor of the Strict Baptist church at Manchester and a well-known preacher in his day, speaking to crowded congregations at home and in London during his annual visits. He compiled a selection of hymns including many of his own composition and published them in a hymnbook which is still used and loved by congregations today. With his son John, he launched in 1835 the Gospel Standard magazine and was its first editor. Included in this edition of Gadsby's sermons is a short biography by B.A. Ramsbottom, editor of the Gospel Standard from 1971-2015.
