These are 'gathered fragments' of the life of this Particular Baptist pastor of Providence Chapel, West Street, Croydon. The chapel was built during his ministerial labours there. He was born in this town, and most of his life and work was confined to this locality. However he was given assurance of faith through a sermon of William Gadsby's whilst in London. He was also in contact with John Warburton and John Kershaw. This account also includes some of his pithy sayings and letters. It originally appeared in 'The Sower' magazine.
If Mr. Covell was great as a preacher, he was equally so in prayer. Few had such earnest pleading with heaven! It was indeed like Elijah on Carmel pulling down the blessing; or Jacob wrestling with the Angel. But he was also a true pastor. Many would call to mind the words of warning, counsel, and comfort, and his generous actions. How his people missed such a pastor, pleader and preacher. May the reader glean much from the life of this eminent servant of Christ.
