It is claimed that this book by William Law (1686 - 1764) has had a greater influence than any other religious book, with the exception of 'Pilgrim's Progress'(!) He combined reasoned argument for Christian evidences, along with deep spiritual earnestness and asceticism. Indeed it is said 'he begat Methodism'. Certainly John Wesley acknowledged a debt to him, and others like Henry Venn and Thomas Scott were impressed in early years. However he held many views in common with the Quakers, and believed in baptismal regeneration, whilst still remaining in the Church of England. A useful reference work.
