Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany on St Martin's Day and was named in honor thereof. His parents were very poor, his father being a mine digger and his mother often carried wood upon her back to earn a living. Luther's early training received great care as his father often invited learned men (clergy, school masters, etc) so that his son could learn from the conversation. Luther's teachers were very severe. He tells us that once he was whipped fifteen times in one day. In the year 1512 Luther was made Doctor of Divinity when he solemnly promised to study and proclaim the Holy Scriptures all his life, and also to defend the holy Christian faith from attacks by false teachers. Luther later sundered his last tie with the Church of Rome as he became the great reformer.
